PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Southeast Asia region has experienced rapid economic development, with annual growth rates exceeding 4 per cent. This inevitably leads to a rise in energy demand and concern about a lack of energy supply. This poses severe challenges not only in terms of energy security in the region, but also in terms of the global climate change response. Within the scope of this project, Malaysia and Thailand are expected to achieve the best economic development performances, but also to witness increased energy demand. This will subsequently require an increased focus on renewable energy provision.
This project aims to support Malaysia’s and Thailand’s government and private sector in enhancing their capacity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve the sustainable development. The project’s outputs are:
1) Evaluation of the implementation of policies and strategies in renewable energy and energy efficiency;
2) sharing the strategies and experiences of advanced economies (the Republic of Korea); and
3) policy recommendations and pilot project planning.
The production of a White Paper by a team of selected Government Officers in target countries will contribute to improved policy implementation in Malaysia and Thailand, increase the ratio of renewable energy sources and enhance energy efficiency.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The project is implemented through cooperation between the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea, the Korea Energy Agency, and government partners in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and Thailand’s Ministry of Energy.
