PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Indonesia has launched its most ambitious energy transition to date, making renewable energy and climate action key priorities in national development. A central component is the Just Energy Transition Partnership (I-JETP), announced at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali on 15 November 2022 by the Indonesian President alongside leaders from the US, Japan, and other members of the International Partners Group (IPG), with support from the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ).
I-JETP aims to accelerate a just and inclusive energy transition in Indonesia by phasing down coal-fired power, scaling up renewable energy, and mobilizing an initial USD 20 billion in public and private financing over three to five years. The partnership also supports the development of a green economy, with a focus on improving the investment climate, addressing community needs, and promoting climate resilience.
To coordinate this effort, a dedicated Secretariat has been established under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, with implementation support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The Secretariat will oversee planning, project identification, and fund deployment, supported by four working groups: technical, policy, financing, and just transition.
The Government of Indonesia has appointed UNDP as the lead of the Just Transition Working Group, supported by ADB, ILO, World Bank, and GIZ. UNDP’s role includes consolidating recommendations across workstreams and developing an implementation timeline. Working group members will focus on legal frameworks, human capital development, and economic opportunities. This collaboration positions UNDP as a key partner in supporting a just energy transition that integrates social, economic, environmental, and governance dimensions.
