PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Heavy industries like cement and concrete are key contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for about 7–8% each of energy-related emissions. These sectors are particularly difficult to decarbonize due to their reliance on fossil fuels for high-temperature production and the limited availability of renewable alternatives or economic incentives for R&D. Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 will require comprehensive strategies, including reducing material demand, improving recycling, and establishing a new market for low-carbon construction products, supported by a global long-term vision. To tackle these challenges, UNIDO leads the Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI), supporting developing countries in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors. In partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Canada, UNIDO is launching a CAD 8 million project in the Indo-Pacific region, primarily focusing on Thailand’s cement and concrete sectors. The project will also promote south-south cooperation by sharing knowledge and strengthening policy frameworks in the Philippines and Malaysia through training and capacity-building efforts.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The program aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the concrete sector through various interventions, including improving energy efficiency in manufacturing processes and promoting the use of renewable energy.
