Contribution to the Energy Transition in SE Asia

NewClimate Institute contributes to Southeast Asia’s energy transition by supporting a shift in the power sector narrative towards an evidence-based transition that robustly supports the region’s socioeconomic development strategies, strengthens energy security and pursues Paris-aligned climate goals.

  • Research and policy development through a climate–development nexus lens
NewClimate Institute generates and strengthens policy-relevant evidence tailored to Southeast Asian contexts, with a focus on Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, to support the alignment of policy planning with power sector decarbonisation efforts. A key focus of the organisation’s work is the climate-development nexus, analysing how energy transition pathways can support people and development priorities. This includes assessing implications for employment, livelihoods and broader socio-economic development, supporting decision makers in integrating energy transition and climate mitigation objectives into development goals.
  • Knowledge exchange through engagement with national stakeholders and partner organisations
NewClimate Institute supports partner organisations and key stakeholders in Southeast Asia through targeted engagement and capacity-building activities, including workshops, trainings and policy dialogues. The organisation contributes international experience for example on financing instruments or carbon pricing to help strengthen policy understanding of decarbonisation-relevant instruments and their impacts, supporting partners in translating evidence into country-specific, actionable policy discussions and locally grounded transition options.
  • Technical analysis and tools to inform decision-making
NewClimate Institute delivers targeted technical analysis to address key decarbonisation questions in the power sector and inform credible transition pathways, including country transition scenarios to support renewable scale-up and electrification. This includes analysis of electricity market and regulatory barriers to variable renewable energy investment and system integration, as well as the role of fossil gas in the region. The Institute also supports policy mapping and tracking through tools to provide a comparative overview of energy and power policy implementation across ASEAN member states.
