As part of its engagement under the ASEAN Power Grid – Advancement Programme (APG-AP), the project Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE), funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German government, actively participated in the first EU-ASEAN Technical Energy Workshop held on 8–9 April 2025 in Bangkok.
The workshop, convened under the EU-ASEAN Energy Dialogue, brought together over 70 policymakers, energy industry leaders, technical experts, and researchers from the European Union (EU) and ASEAN Member States to strengthen cooperation on building a sustainable, integrated regional energy system. Organised and funded by the EU’s Technical Assistance Facility to the Green Team Europe Initiative (TAF-GTEI), the two-day workshop served as a collaborative platform to exchange experiences and promote regional electricity integration.
Opened by Thailand’s Vice Minister of Energy, Col. Fuangvich Aniruth-deva, and the Ambassador of the European Union to Thailand, H.E. David Daly, the event highlighted the critical role of cross-border cooperation and market integration in enhancing energy security, accelerating renewable energy deployment, and fostering economic prosperity across ASEAN.
CASE contributed to the dialogue by sharing regional insights on power system integration, energy transition strategies, and the importance of harmonized policies to facilitate efficient and sustainable electricity trade. The CASE project’s participation reflects its commitment to supporting the ASEAN Power Grid initiative and regional power market development through evidence-based research and stakeholder engagement.
Key sessions of the workshop addressed:
- Market-based approaches to grid interconnectivity,
- Integration of large-scale renewable energy projects,
- Regional collaboration in grid planning and management.
Participants explored technical solutions and regulatory frameworks essential for advancing cross-border electricity trade and strengthening energy resilience. Representatives from ASEAN Member States presented national policies and flagship projects aimed at improving interconnection and supporting clean energy transitions.
A field visit to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand’s (EGAT) Demand Response Control Centre complemented the discussions, offering participants first-hand insights into the application of advanced grid technologies and demand-side management solutions.
The CASE project’s involvement in this high-level exchange underscores its ongoing efforts to foster greater regional collaboration in Southeast Asia’s energy transition, contributing towards a resilient, secure, and sustainable energy future for the ASEAN region.
