Dear SIPET Connect subscriber,
Four years ago today, SIPET went live.
On 30 September 2022, we launched the Southeast Asia Information Platform for Energy Transition (SIPET) through Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE) , implemented by GIZ and our partners, with a simple idea at its heart: any transition depends on informed decisions, and informed decisions depend on credible knowledge.
We wanted to create a place where people working on Southeast Asia’s energy transition could find reliable data and information, follow developments across countries, discover relevant initiatives and research, and learn from one another.
This ambition was closely connected to our mission of CASE. Since 2020, CASE has worked to support evidence-based energy transitions across Southeast Asia, bringing together research, transparency, dialogue, empowerment and communication to help advance clean, affordable and secure energy systems. SIPET became one way of bringing these different strands together in a shared regional space.
Built through collaboration
Over the years, SIPET grew beyond a platform for information. It became a space for sharing knowledge, connecting perspectives and making the work of a growing energy transition community more visible.
Building SIPET also served as a reminder of something we experience throughout our work in CASE: there is no single pathway for Southeast Asia’s energy transition. Countries across the region have different energy systems, priorities, institutions and opportunities. At the same time, many of the questions they face are shared.
Creating opportunities to make these different experiences visible – and to learn across countries – has therefore been at the heart of SIPET. The platform has benefited enormously from the knowledge, ideas and feedback of the many people and organisations that contributed along the way.
From CASE to a regional home
As CASE approaches the end of its journey, SIPET is now entering its next chapter.
From the beginning, we knew that SIPET would eventually need to move beyond CASE. CASE is a project with a defined lifetime, while SIPET was created with a longer-term ambition: to serve as a regional platform for knowledge and exchange on Southeast Asia’s energy transition.
We are very pleased that SIPET will find this new home with the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) , with its knowledge and resources transitioning into the ASEAN Energy Database System (AEDS). For a platform built around a regional perspective, becoming part of ASEAN’s dedicated institution for energy is a natural fit, and an opportunity for what we started through CASE to continue serving the region for years to come.
The platform may be transitioning – the underlying cause is not. Southeast Asia’s energy transition is accelerating and evolving, and the need for accessible knowledge, transparency, exchange and collaboration is as important as ever.
And while CASE itself is approaching its conclusion, the organisations and people that have made up CASE remain deeply engaged in this work. The partnerships, knowledge and connections built over the past years will continue to contribute to advancing clean, affordable and secure energy systems across the region.

SIPET has always been a collective effort.
Our sincere thanks go to our CASE partners – Agora Energiewende, NewClimate Institute, the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC), the Energy Research Institute (ERI) at Chulalongkorn University, and the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI), and to the many GIZ colleagues who contributed to SIPET’s development and realisation, as well as our government, research and institutional partners across Southeast Asia.
We also extend our thanks to Asia Clean Energy Partners and V2 Infotech for their important contributions to developing, communicating and maintaining SIPET.
And, above all, thank you to everyone who made the platform a living resource: those who shared data and research, contributed projects and insights, joined our events, provided feedback, read SIPET Connect, or used SIPET in their own work.
The journey continues
This may be the final edition of SIPET Connect, but it is not the end of what we started together.
As SIPET moves into its new home with ACE and AEDS, CASE continues its work across Southeast Asia. In the months ahead, we will be sharing more from our work, the knowledge and lessons we have built together, and what comes next. So while this is goodbye from SIPET Connect, stay tuned to CASE as our journey continues.
SIPET was built on the idea that Southeast Asia’s energy transition becomes stronger when knowledge is shared, different perspectives are heard, and people across countries and institutions learn from one another. That idea will continue, through ACE and AEDS, through the work of the CASE partners, and through the wider community that has grown around the region’s energy transition.
