Promoting the Transition of the Energy Sector in Viet Nam (TEV).

The TEV project aims to foster the development of a long-term political energy transition strategy, including legal and regulatory fundamentals, and the transfer of technological knowledge for a low-carbon, environmentally friendly energy transition.

July 2022 - June 2025
Feasibility Study on PLN’s Indonesia-Malaysia Cross-border Interconnection Project

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) signed a grant agreement with Indonesian national utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) for a feasibility study to support of the development of two cross-border power interconnections between Indonesia and Malaysia. The project, which advances a key power sector objective for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), will facilitate efficient resource sharing to help meet growing energy demands, enhance energy security, and implement policies for clean energy and climate protection goals in both countries.

March 2024 - December 2026
Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) Air Conditioning Efficiency

The project aims to support Vietnam in its implementation of a national policy roadmap for air conditioners. Through the Lower Mekong Initiative and the ASEAN Standardization Harmonization Initiative for Efficiency (SHINE) program, this project will build on the existing ASEAN Regional Policy Roadmap and the Vietnam National Roadmap by assisting Vietnam in implementing higher minimum energy performance standards for air conditioning and encouraging enforcement of those standards.

January 2017 - December 2022
ASEAN Interconnection Master Plan Study Phase III Part of the USAID Clean Power Asia Project

The project focuses on enhancing energy security, increasing efficiency, and facilitating the integration of renewable energy resources within the region. The primary objective of the AIMS project is to establish a robust and interconnected power grid among ASEAN member countries. The project aims to facilitate the exchange of electricity across borders, promote power trade, optimize energy resources, and enhance the overall reliability and resilience of the ASEAN power systems.

January 2020 - December 2021
ASEAN Power Grid Transmission System Operator (ATSO)

This project studies the formation of the ASEAN Power Grid Transmission System Operator Institution (ATSO). It provides an overview of the international case examples that have been used as a basis in creating the ATSO project deliverables. The project is aligned and coordinated with the deliverables from the Study on the Formation of the ASEAN Power Grid Generation and Transmission System Planning Institution (AGTP).

January 2020 - January 2021
Feasibility Study in ASEAN Multilateral Power Trade part of the ASEAN-Australia DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION PHASE II

This project produces a report that identifies a set of minimum political, technical and institutional requirements that the ASEAN member states will need to meet in order to establish multilateral power trading in the region. Some of these minimum requirements can be met by building upon existing efforts in the region.

January 2019 - January 2019
ASEAN Renewable Energy Integration Analysis

In support of the development of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), the IEA has undertaken a quantitative assessment of the impact of regional power system integration in ASEAN to accommodate the growing share of variable renewable energy (VRE), which consists of solar and wind generation. The analysis explores the impact of multilateral power trading (MPT) and expanded cross-border interconnectors as well as the value of flexibility resources for the APG from economic, operational, environmental, and policy-related perspectives.

January 2019 - January 2019
Energy interconnection in ASEAN for sustainable and resilient societies accelerating energy transition

This joint research project on power grid interconnection has identified practical measures for substantially increasing the penetration of clean energy across the ASEAN countries. Its analysis provides a firm foundation for achieving regional energy interconnection, which also promotes sustainable transboundary power trade.

January 2018 - December 2018
Preparation for the Ban Sok-Pleiku Power Transmission Project in the Greater Mekong Subregion

The Project will establish a 500 kV power transmission line between Lao PDR and Viet Nam forming an essential link of the GMS power grid.

January 2008 - December 2015
Hawai’I Asia pacific Regional Energy System Assessment (APRESA) ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS) III Support

AIMS III seeks to address: rapid changes in the economic landscape and electricity supply; renewable energy integration (including the ASEAN RE target of 23% of the energy mix by 2025); benefits and challenges of higher variable renewable energy (VRE) integration; adoption of new emerging technologies; and the sustainability and advancement of multilateral power trade.

HNEI GridSTART provided training to the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE), an intergovernmental organization within the ASEAN structure representing the AMS interests in the energy sector, on production cost analysis and use of the PLEXOS software tool to empower ACE personnel to more effectively carry out project management duties for the AIMS III study.
