ASEAN Interconnection Master Plan Study Phase III Part of the USAID Clean Power Asia Project

The project focuses on enhancing energy security, increasing efficiency, and facilitating the integration of renewable energy resources within the region. The primary objective of the AIMS project is to establish a robust and interconnected power grid among ASEAN member countries. The project aims to facilitate the exchange of electricity across borders, promote power trade, optimize energy resources, and enhance the overall reliability and resilience of the ASEAN power systems.

January 2020 - December 2021
ASEAN Renewable Energy Integration Analysis

In support of the development of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), the IEA has undertaken a quantitative assessment of the impact of regional power system integration in ASEAN to accommodate the growing share of variable renewable energy (VRE), which consists of solar and wind generation. The analysis explores the impact of multilateral power trading (MPT) and expanded cross-border interconnectors as well as the value of flexibility resources for the APG from economic, operational, environmental, and policy-related perspectives.

January 2019 - January 2019
Energy interconnection in ASEAN for sustainable and resilient societies accelerating energy transition

This joint research project on power grid interconnection has identified practical measures for substantially increasing the penetration of clean energy across the ASEAN countries. Its analysis provides a firm foundation for achieving regional energy interconnection, which also promotes sustainable transboundary power trade.

January 2018 - December 2018
Harmonizing the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Power Integration Project

This regional technical assistance (RETA) is designed to support the continuous work of the Regional Power Trade Coordination Committee, the Working Group on Performance Standard and Grid Code, the Working Group on Regulatory Issues, and eventually the Regional Power Coordination Center in laying the essential building blocks to facilitate GMS regional power trade.

January 2014 - December 2023
The Trans Borneo Power Grid (Sarawak to West Kalimantan Link)

The Trans Borneo power grid project will enable Sarawak (Malaysia) to export additional electricity to West Kalimantan (Indonesia) thereby generating additional income for SEB. It will also help to diversify West Kalimantan’s energy generation portfolio by retiring inefficient oil-based power plants, while reducing CO2 emissions in the Borneo Island.

January 2016 - January 2016
Preparation for the Ban Sok-Pleiku Power Transmission Project in the Greater Mekong Subregion

The Project will establish a 500 kV power transmission line between Lao PDR and Viet Nam forming an essential link of the GMS power grid.

January 2008 - December 2015
ASEAN Infrastructure Fund (AIF)

The ASEAN Infrastructure Fund (AIF) is a financing facility established by the ASEAN Infrastructure Financing Mechanism (AIFM) to support infrastructure development in the ASEAN region, including the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative. Examples of funding to transmission lines projects that will be part of APG:
1.    Indonesia: Java Bali Power Transmission (USD25 million)
2.    Sumatra Power Transmission Improvement Project
3.    the Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP–EAGA).
4.     The Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT)

January 2012 - March 2024
Powering Past Coal Alliance

The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) is a coalition of national and subnational governments, businesses and organizations working to advance the transition from unabated coal power generation to clean energy.

January 2017 - December 2025
Eastern Indonesia Sustainable Energy Access Sector project

The proposed $635 million sector loan aims to help improve access to electricity services in Eastern Indonesia (Kalimantan, Maluku, Nusa Tenggara, Papua, and Sulawesi) by supporting a cluster of new small- to mid-sized power stations fueled by natural gas which is a clean burning fuel that has lower power generation costs and less local pollutants and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to diesel- fired units. The project also plans to include pilot-scale gas and solar hybrid units that can help enhance the borrower’s operational know-how and position them well for future scale up of renewable energy use.

January 2016 - December 2019
Renewable Energy Development

The Project will expand renewable energy use by about 82 MW which will displace energy generated by fossil fuels (about 480 GWh annually) and thereby limit the emissions of greenhouse gases. These sub-projects will be developed in the outer islands and are part of the countries least cost planning for capacity expansion. This Project is consistent with the countries plan to develop local non-fossil sources of energy and with the ADB’s Energy Policy of promoting clean energy development.

January 2002 - December 2014
